Index > Feature request > Email address as Username
Hello,
Sorry that this question might seem very left field or "that's an easy one, just do this and this" but I haven't found an answer for it during my travels..
I'm looking for a way to make the username they login to the site the same as the users email address and would ideally like to handle it at the point of registration.
Edit: Well, a feature request: Option to use Email Address as a Username
Thanks
SG

I think this could be a great option to have. I know I like it when I don't have to remember a unique username on a website that I use infrequently, in order to log in. There should be the option of logging in with a username OR email address.

@SoulGlo:
you still can do that. Simply add a comment to your registration form, that users may use an email-adress as user name. TL accepts a mail adress as user name.
@Logan:
How far should TL support your obliviousness ?
Imho a user should remember his login data, at least his user name (which may be a mail adress, s.a.). If he forgets his user name, he may forget his used email adress as well. How do you want to support this case?

NoSi, while that is an option - it is one I am not a fan of. Having to enter an the same information twice is a pain as a user.
And while Usernames are okay in most instances - the site I am working on is aimed at a more corporate group of people so I find that the Username would seem too amature for the people the site is aimed at.
Cheers

Bumping this thread again.
I don't see any benefits of using usernames for registration.
I only see disadvantages:
Today it's more common that users register with their e-mailaddress.
I only see benefits:
People who prefer username over e-mailaddresses are more than welcome to say the benefits of usernames. Because I don't see any.
Are there any plans to change the registration module to use the e-mailaddress instead of a custom username? Or are there any good ways to adjust the code to do this?

I only see disadvantages:
- Usernames seems too amateur. Especially at corporate websites.
- People often forget their username, and instead register a second time. (http://www.typolight.org/forum/message/15655.html)
- The username they want might already be taken. (On large websites)
- Usernames are so from the 90's..
Today it's more common that users register with their e-mailaddress.
I only see benefits:
- E-mail adresses are always unique.
- Easier for the user to remember the e-mailaddress than a made up username. Increased usability.
- Most websites today has this approach.

Advantage for using usernames is IMO having (mostly) shorter names, which increases readability of websites containing user names. But this only applies for community sites.
I do also think that an option for using the e-Mail address instead of a username for login would be great
