Index > Announcements > TYPOlight vs. Horst Eugen
Recently, I have been reading a lot of questions and wrong information about "Horst Eugen", which lead to unnecessary discussions regarding the sustainability of TYPOlight. So, here is an official statement:
1. Horst Eugen has nothing to do with TYPOlight
Horst Eugen is neither a "code name" for a particular TYPOlight version, nor a new major release or a system that is able/meant to replace TYPOlight. Horst Eugen has no bearing on TYPOlight and it only exists on paper so far.
TYPOlight is a technically mature and modern CMS that will be further developed in the future. At no time did I plan to discontinue it or replace it with another CMS. TYPOlight is an independent and successful dot-org project in the classical sense and will be carried on like this in the future.
2. TYPOlight 3.0
At the user meeting, I announced that TYPOlight 3.0 is unlikely to come. I said this, because version 2 is already very mature and I do not think that we need another major release. However, if there should be dramatic changes to the core that require a new major version in the future, it surely will be released.
In no way this means that TYPOlight was an incomplete or bad system that had to be replaced by another one! Quite contrary to it, TYPOlight is a modern and secure CMS that gets a lot of positive feedback and is being actively developed. It is worth it to support the project, create custom extensions and use it for commercial projects or as CMS for your customers.
3. Horst Eugen
At the user meeting, I have presented a possible concept for a new CMS, basically an essence of popular TYPOlight functions and frequently requested features that are not included in TYPOlight due to conceptual restrictions like the accessible back end. We could use a lot more Ajax and JavaScript functions if not for the accessibility rules.
However, the new system will have a different strategic alignment than TYPOlight and can not be called a replacement at all. In addition, it will most likely not be a classical dot-org project, but a commercial open source project similar to Magento or CodeIgniter. In contrast to TYPOlight, which I have developed as an individual, Horst Eugen will be a B2B project.
The only thing that TYPOlight and Horst Eugen will have in common, is being created by the same developer. Apart from that, there will be no parallels and we will start the new project from scratch. Of course, I hope that there will be a Horst Eugen community and developers who contribute custom extensions someday, but this will be independent from the existing TYPOlight community. So, if TYPOlight is the CMS of your choice, you can be sure that it remains available in the future.
