The install tool stops with a blank screen after entering the encryption key.

This is most likely an eAccelerator bug. The eAccelerator is a server tool to optimize the PHP execution. However, only the most recent versions are fully compatible with PHP 5, so either update or disable it. If you are on a shared hosting server, ask your provider to do the update.
